Course Description

This course provides basic understanding fundamental of Materials including Metals, Polymers, Ceramics, Composites and Electronics. Structures and properties of each Material type are described such as Mechanical, Electrical, Physical and Microstructure.

This course emphasizes Metal and Cement carbide materials including selection materials for different applications, mechanical property and testing (lecture and workshop), how to apply the knowledge to real industry case.

Day 1 Lecture; 09.00-16.00 hr.

  • Fundamental of Materials including Type of materials and Property
  • Classifications of Metals

Day 2 Lecture; 09.00-16.00 hr.

  • Mechanical property and testing of Metals
  • Techniques to improve material property in Metals
    • Alloy element
    • Strain hardening
    • Heat treatment
  • Application of Metals

Day 3 Lecture; 09.00-16.00 hr.

  • Overview of Cement carbide material
  • Classifications and Material properties of Cement carbide
  • Application of Cement carbide
  • Failure in Machine Tools
  • Material degradation of Metal and of Cement carbide

Day 4 Workshop; 09.00-16.00 hr.

  • Microstructure workshop i.e. microstructure of each material and grain size Tribology workshop i.e. Ball on disk test, Wear loss measurement. Residual stress workshop
  • Hardness, Impact, Tensile test
