Course Description

This course provide basic understanding of Fundamental and classification of Metal forming processes in Automotive parts such as Bulk Metal Forming Process ,Sheet Metal Forming Process and Powder Metal Forming Process including Material behaviors in Metal forming , Temperature in Metal Forming, Strain Rate Sensitivity , Friction and Lubrication in Metal Forming and etc. Moreover, a large number of industrial case studies and Workshop are presented to the attendees to emphasize course content.

Course Outline

Day 1 Lecture

  • Definitions and classification of Metal forming processes

Overview in Metal forming Processes including Introduction, Definition and Classification of Metal forming processes (Brief description of forming operations i.e. Bulk forming, Sheet metal forming Powder metal forming, Hot working, Warm Working and Cold working)

  • Material science in Metal Forming

         Material behavior in Metal forming (Plastic deformation, Flow stress and Strain rate)

  • Tribology in Metal forming (Friction ,Lubrication and Wear)
  • Bulk Metal Forming Processes
    • Forging: Close and Open die forging , Forging Machine and Capability , Die design and other forging operations.
    • Rolling: Flat and Shape Rolling Processes, Rolling equipment and Capability.
    • Extrusion and Drawing: Direct, indirect and hydrostatic extrusion, Equipment and Capability, Die design and Limitation.

Day 2 Lecture

  • Sheet Metal Forming Processes
    • Shearing: Mechanics of shearing, Shearing Parameters and Shearing Operations
    • Bending: Types of bending and equipment; Spring-back and Bending Forces
    •  Other operations
    • Sheet metal formability
  • Powder Metal Forming Processes
    • Production of Metal Powders
    • Compaction of Metal Powders
    • Sintering
    • Secondary and Finishing Operations

Day 3 Workshop

AM     Press Machine (Bulk forming) and Forming Limit Diagram workshop (Sheet forming)

PM      Hot press forming (Powder forming)
